BEIJING, China (UPI) — The former roommate of a Chinese student felled 10 years ago by a mysterious poisoning has denied that she was involved.

The victim, Zhu Ling, was a chemistry student at Tsinghua University in 1995 when she developed baffling symptoms. By the time thallium poisoning had been diagnosed as the cause, she had suffered irreversible damage and remains paralyzed, almost blind and mute, China Daily reported.

The young woman`s family has always suspected her roommate, who was doing research with a professor and had access to thallium.

Increased use of the Internet has sparked interest in the case, with students and others helping to raise money for Zhu`s treatment and discussing the case. The roommate has been named so often as the poisoner that she felt compelled to issue a denial.

‘Rumors about me have been spreading all the time, but I retained my silence all the years as I always believed my innocence would be proven one day,’ she said. ‘However, my silence has given people reason to doubt. Even my friends are asking me about the case. Therefore, I have decided to issue a statement of innocence here. I am innocent, and also a victim of the case.’
